‘ITS AN HONOUR AND A PRIVELEDGE TO BE THE CUSTODIAN OF THE RESTORATION AND THE REDEVELOPMENT OF THIS EXTRAORDINARY BUILDING’
MICHAEL GRANT, THE DEVELOPER
POPOV BASS ARCHITECTS
The Griffiths Teas development has been years in the making,
an entire city looking on as the fate of this historic building takes
shape. Bringing this Sydney landmark into the 21st century
requires a distinctive architectural approach – a singular design
aesthetic to match the iconic nature of the building.
Enter PopovBass. First founded in 1984, this highly regarded,
multi-award-winning architectural and interior design practice
has worked on projects throughout Australia and the Asia-Pacific
region. The Practice has received numerous major awards
from the Australian Institute of Architects including winning the
Wilkinson Award and the Robin Boyd Award on multiple occasions
and the Architecture Australia prize to name a few. PopovBass are
renowned for their site-specific designs and a rigorous focus on
detailing. They create refined residential spaces that are designed
to be lived in – working with the flow of light and distinctive
materials to create homes that possess a calm, comfortable
modernity, while also radiating warmth.
PopovBass sees the rebirth of the Griffiths Teas building as an
emblem of the rejuvenation of the Surry Hills neighbourhood. By
leaving untouched the many heritage elements of the building,
both external and internal, the development pays homage to the
vibrancy of the neighbourhood’s last golden age, when Griffiths
Teas stood proud at one of the commercial and industrial centres
of inner Sydney.
Together PopovBass and Cornerstone have created a historic
moment for a historic building, as the lights blink on once again in
one of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks.
